      The short answer is that it is probably an evolutionary adaptation to increase the chances of fertilization. Remember, the sperms have to swim through quite a distance for fertilization to occur in the fallopian tubes. Alot of them do not make it all the way, however, even if they did, timing is essential. Those that survive longer have a better chance of causing fertilization.
