There are a few indicators of disease outbreak. From a scientific perspective, surveillance of disease outbreaks is determined through hospital records for example, when there is an outbreak of a disease, more people go to the hospital than usual. Another way to know about outbreaks is through presence of certain disease symptoms within the same geographical area. Recently, scientists are also developing new technologies such as mobile phone applications to enable people report disease symptoms. When many people report symptoms at the same time from the same area, it is likely there is an outbreak of a certain disease.
